Andy Dick and D.L. Hughley join Dancing with the Stars, Dick once turned down the ABC show

Comedians Andy Dick and D.L. Hughley will compete on the sixteenth season of ABC’s hit show Dancing with the Stars this year, it was announced on Good Morning America today. But what people might not know is that Dick actually turned down an offer to be on the show during its first season in 2005. In an interview conducted in October of 2011, Dick told Laughspin he regretted his decision, as his career was in need of a major jump start.

“That was another one of those missed opportunities,” Dick told Laughspin. “They asked me to do Dancing With the Stars in the first season. This was before it was a sensation. I had no idea what it was, and I was like, ‘That sounds weird. I don’t think that’s going to work.’ And, of course, it became a gigantic phenomenon and a year later I said, ‘Yeah, I actually would like to be on. It’ll be fun. It’ll help revitalize my career.’ And they said, ‘No thank you.’ They got Hulk Hogan’s daughter. Like what, really?

When asked if he’d join Saturday Night Live if he was asked (he had also said no to that offer years ago, he says), Dick admitted, “I would jump at that opportunity. But you’re talking to a guy who, if Dancing With the Stars called, I’d say, ‘I’m putting my tap shoes on now, bitch.’”

Well, now he’ll have a chance to prove it, as Dick has been paired with professional dancer Sharna Burgess, who’s appearing for the first time on the show this year. Veteran comedian Hughley, on the other hand, has been paired with Cheryl Burke, one of Dancing with the Stars‘ most high profile series regulars. And unlike Dick, who, arguably, may still need a profile bump, Hughley has been plenty busy in the last year,  releasing a new hour comedy special Reset and publishing his book I Want You to Shut the F#ck Up: How the Audacity of Dopes Is Ruining America.

Dick and Hughley join a somewhat short list of comedians who have participated on the show: Adam Carolla (season six), Jeffrey Ross (season seven), David Alan Grier (season seven) and Margaret Cho (season 11), none of whom ranked well in the competition. Both Carolla and Grier finished in ninth place in their seasons while Cho and Ross finished 10th and 13th, respectively. So, Dick and Hughley have some pretty small dance shoes to fill.

The comedians join season 16 contestants boxer Victor Ortiz, Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Jacoby Jones, General Hospital star Ingo Rademacher, Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman, country singers Kellie Pickler and Wynonna Judd, Disney Channel star Zendaya Coleman, iconic figure skater Dorothy Hamill and Lisa Vanderpump of the Real Housewive of Beverly Hills. The two-hour season premiere of Dancing with the Stars goes down March 18 at 8 pm EST.
