• Aziz Ansari will write a relationship book, reportedly snags $3.5 million advance

If you’ve been lucky enough in recent months to have seen Aziz Ansari working out new material onstage, you may have noticed his views on relationships have become a bit more nuanced, if not darker. And those observations will serve him well as he’s just inked a deal with Penguin to write his first book— and it’s all about dating in the age of social media and hyper-evolving technology. But, according to Scott Moyers, vice president and publisher at Penguin, the book is going to be much more than a string of essays about Ansari’s ill-fated relationships.

“He’s not messing around,” Moyers says. “He’s enlisting the aide of a formidable crew of experts, and conducting his own fascinating, and hilarious, experiments. This will be a funny book that also shines a bright light on a whole new landscape, which incidentally concerns the future makeup of the species.”

Ansari puts a finer point on the book’s expected purview: “You know when you text someone you’re romantically interested in and you don’t hear anything back and then you see them post a photo of a pizza on Instagram? That’s exactly what I want this book to deal with,” he says. “These are strange conundrums that no generation has ever faced before and it’s a fascinating jumping off point for what I hope will be a very interesting book about modern courtship.”

And also, he’s getting a reported $3.5 million advance. So there’s that.

Interestingly, Ansari is now the second Parks and Recreation castmember to be enlisted to write a book for Penguin. On Oct. 1, Nick Offerman (aka Ron Swanson) will release Paddle Your Own Canoe: One Man’s Fundamentals for Delicious Living. Ansari’s book is set for release in September of 2015.
