Big Bang Theory gets three year renewal, not looking good for Robin Williams comedy

CBS Chief Executive Officer Les Moonves is standing by his comedies. The network has announced an early round of show renewals, picking up nine dramas, six comedies, and two reality shows for at least another season. 2 Broke Girls, The Millers, Mike & Molly and Mom will return for another full year this fall. Long-time favorite Two and a Half Men will return for an 11th season, although CBS has not decided if this will be its final season.

Chuck Lorre’s fourth series on the Eyeball Network scored big this week, as The Big Bang Theory was given a three-year renewal, the type of deal that is only used when a network is extremely committed to a program (which we saw Comedy Central give to Tosh.0 back in December). Last season’s highest-rated scripted show on television has been a monstrous payoff for CBS, despite the rising costs of keeping it on the air. Moonves will keep The Big Bang Theory on CBS through 2017, reportedly at the tune of over $4 million per episode! Now he just needs to take care of his stars’ soon-to-expire contracts.

The Robin Williams and Sarah Michelle Gellar comedy The Crazy Ones is all but dead towards the end of its first season. It was not included in the first wave of renewals and CBS has already greenlgihted two new comedies, Friends With Better Lives and Bad Teacher. Space has to be made somewhere. How I Met Your Mother ends its tenure after nine seasons on March 31, although a spin-off How I Met Your Dad has a pilot order in the works.

CBS has come a long way since living in the comedic shadows of the former sitcom champion NBC.
