• Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons comes out as gay

Jim Parsons, known for his role on The Big Bang Theory as arrogant Sheldon, officially came out in an interview with The New York Times. The interview centers on Parson’s career on Broadway, specifically in the comedic play from 1944, Harvey, in which Parsons currently plays the part of Elwood, previously played by Jimmy Stewart in the play’s revival in 1970. The piece is not an outing of Parson’s sexuality but more of an article that chronicles Parson’s journey as a talented, hard-working and versatile actor. Being gay is another facet of this journey brought out by some of the roles Parson has tackled.

The defining event for Parsons was midway through season four of his wildly popular CBS show, when he was propelled once again hit the live stage. He found himself playing the role of Tommy Boatwright, a young gay activist in The Normal Heart. The Times reports, the role really “resonated” with Parsons in part because he is gay and has been in a relationship for 10 years. “Working with an ensemble again onstage was like nourishment,” Parsons said.

Though the National Enquirer “outed” Parsons in 2010 by reporting on his engagement to Todd Spiewak, this is Parson’s first consenting public acknowledgement of his sexuality.
