“Welcome to @Twitter, @POTUS!” Bill Clinton tweeted to Obama’s new Twitter handle. “One question: Does that username stay with the office? #askingforafriend.” The “friend,” of course, is Bill’s wife, Hillary, who is running for the presidency in 2016.
Now, Obama finally has a Twitter account of his own. So what took so long? Per Washington Post, another user had already registered the @POTUS handle. While that user was not actively tweeting from that handle, the White House still had to work with Twitter to get the handle transferred to the President.
“The @POTUS Twitter account will serve as a new way for President Obama to engage directly with the American people, with tweets coming exclusively from him,” the White House said in a statement. “President Obama is committed to making his Administration the most open and participatory in history, and @POTUS will give Americans a new venue to engage on the issues that matter most to them.”
