Bill Cosby American Comedy Awards red carpet look: sweatsuit all the way! (Photo)

Bill Cosby at American Comedy AwardsBill Cosby was honored with the Johnny Carson Award for Comedic Excellence at the American Comedy Awards last night, as the ceremony was filmed at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York. The ceremony will air May 8 at 9 pm ET on NBC. And while Cosby looked dapper as he accepted his award, he arrived on the red carpet looking casual– because, well, he’s Bill Cosby and he can do whatever he damn well pleases!

As the likes of Keegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele, Craig Robinson, Amy Poehler, Aubrey Plaza, Leslie Mann, Kate McKinnon (all donned in their finest duds) fielded questions from a gaggle of journalists, the iconic Cosby, 76, was all about comfort as he charmed the carpet dwellers wearing a baggy, grey “Penn Athletics” sweatsuit. Laughspin assistant editor Billy Procida snapped this photo of Cosby as he was answering some questions from Huffington Post Comedy editor Katla McGlynn. We love that Cosby was dressed down. But a few words of warning to all up and coming comedy types who get invited to red carpet events: You are not Billy Cosby. Buy a suit!

“This is where I started: NBC and Johnny Carson,” Bill Cosby said last week. “Bill Cosby is an iconic figure at the forefront of the American comedy landscape,” said Paul Telegdy, President, Alternative and Late Night Programming, NBC Entertainment. “His work in television, film, stand-up comedy and literature has shaped the national sense of humor and has had an enduring impact on comedians and fans of all ages. We are delighted to honor him with the Johnny Carson Award during NBC’s inaugural broadcast of the ‘American Comedy Awards.'”
