Happy Anniversary Mr. Maher.
Comedian Bill Maher is celebrating his 25th year as a talk show host and political pundit with his upcoming Real Time With Bill Maher: Anniversary Special, which debuts this Friday on HBO. The hour-long retrospective will take a look at Maher’s long career as a late night host of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher and his previous show Politically Incorrect, which aired first on Comedy Central and then on ABC from 1993 – 2002.
The special will spotlight memorable guest interviews via archived footage with some of the world’s most famous—or in some cases, most infamous— journalists, entertainers, and pundits such as Ben Affleck, Ann Coulter, Salman Rushdie, and Maureen Dowd. The anniversary show will also feature new commentary from notable celebrities like former President Barack Obama, Seinfeld co-creator Larry David, author Fran Lebowitz, documentary filmmaker Michael Moore, and icon Barbra Streisand.
Over the past quarter-century, Maher’s unique perspective on current events—using monologues, roundtable discussions, and interviews—has left an indelible mark on mainstream culture. Some view him as the “Godfather” of political comedy, putting those who “go against the family” to task. Others see his viewpoints as archaic and his observations as a part of comedy’s bygone era. Ultimately, whether one loves or hates him, his production of such a massive library of television content for three different networks over the course of 25 years is a notable entertainment milestone to accomplish. All while still putting out the occasional stand-up special.
Real Time With Bill Maher: Anniversary Special will air on October 19 at 10:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. PT on HBO. The special will also be available on HBO NOW, HBO GO, HBO On Demand and other streaming platforms after its initial broadcast.
