David Cross’ directorial debut HITS will be released as a pay-what-you-want file through BitTorrent on Feb. 13, the first ever film to be distributed as a “BitTorrent Bundle.” Furthermore, fans will able to see HITS in movie theaters in select markets throughout the United States and Canada; there, viewers can also choose what they want to pay. Meanwhile David Cross’ film will also be released more traditionally in New York and Los Angeles in theaters as well as through iTunes, Vimeo, Google Play and more.
“With the release of HITS, we’re giving audiences what they want, when they want it, in the form they want it in and at a price that they choose,” says Giles Andrew founder of Honora, who produced HITS. “As far as we know, this experiment is the first of its kind and was borne out of an unwavering belief in the film and our hopes for it to reach the widest possible audience.”
In addition to the BitTorrent release and screenings, David Cross has just launched a Kickstarter campaign to help get the film in as many cities as possible. “For me this is all about offering as many fans as possible the opportunity to see this film,” says Cross. “What we would do with the money we raise here is go out to a number of different cities, rent and pay for a theater, the staffing, marketing, and then fans can pay what they want to see the film. The more money we raise, the more cities we can go to.” Cross and co. are looking for $100,000.
