• Bridgetown Comedy Festival: Day 4

bridgetown comedy festivalPORTLAND, OR – Sunday marked the last day of the Bridgetown Comedy Festival, and though there were fewer shows to attend, I did see some solid comedy to end the weekend.

I popped around a lot on Sunday to check out some of the festival’s up-and-coming comics. Mostly I tried to see people whose names I had heard from other comics and attendees. One of my favorites was Sharon Lacey, who was different than any other comic I’d seen, not only because of her age, but with her focuses on parenting and her former life as a school teacher.

Also, Brandon Wardell surprised me as one of the youngest performers at the festival, at only 18-years-old. His obvious youth threw me off when I first saw him, but his material was clean and smart and it made me want to crawl into a hole and cry because he’s doing so much at such a young age.

After I drank some whiskey to get over the depression, I wandered to Bagdad to catch Brent Weinbach. After only seeing his musical set on Thursday, I was super excited to see him doing a regular set and I laughed harder than I had most of the festival. The awkward delivery he is known for was fantastic live and he obviously has a lot of fans in this town.

I also got to see Billy Wayne Davis (finally), whose Southern charm made the audience warm to him immediately, and his material was on point. Also: he is adorable.

This weekend was amazing overall. Standout moments? Kristen Schaal dancing, the whole Persona! show, Doug Benson, Margaret Cho and the other folks at Laughter Against the Machine, seeing the streets filled with comics – and just knowing that I live in a city that values laughter so much.

See you next year, Bridgetown Comedy Festival. I love you.
