• Can comedy be taught? Documentary ‘Finding the Funny’ attempts to answer (Video)

Most comedians seem to agree that comedy can not be taught, and you can really only learn by doing. But chances are, you can find and enroll in a “comedy class” in your area. Finding the Funny is a new documentary by John Bizarre about the merits of teaching comedy. The film follows comedian and comedy coach Don Barnhart, who runs a comedy class in Las Vegas, as he tries to teach the art to a group of aspiring comics.

The film addresses the question of whether or not you can really teach someone how to be funny. Don says of the issues: “I’m not so sure you can teach someone to be funny but you can work on an individual’s technique and help develop his or her style. Even famous actors continue to study and hone their craft throughout their careers. And many great comedians have taken all kinds of classes to better themselves, so anyone who tells you that you shouldn’t work on your game has an ulterior motive.”

The film features Wendy Liebman (pictured above), Jimmy Shubert, Andy Kindler, Louie Anderson, Brad Garrett, Marty Allen and others weighing in on the issue. The film is available on DVD over on the Finding the Funny website, and you can watch the trailer below.
