World famous comedy venue Carolines on Broadway and Punchline Magazine have joined forces to present the Breakout Artist Comedy Series. Each Tuesday, at Carolines in New York City, an emerging stand-up comedy star will headline their own show and prove just why they’ve been quietly building a name for themselves in the national comedy scene.

And since we here at Punchline Magazine are all about exposing the best comedians – well-known or not – we’ll be profiling each comedian taking part in the Carolines series each week. So let’s get to this week’s headliner: Julian McCullough!

Julian McCullough is a comedian. He is also very mature for his age and seriously has it together. He has taped a half hour special for Comedy Central that airs in March of this year, was featured on the IFC hit “Z-ROCK” as well as several programs on the VH1 and the MTV. In 2007 he performed as part of the Montreal Comedy Festival’s New Faces showcase and in 2008 he came in first place at the New York City Comedy Festival. Julian also has some big things coming up that he can’t talk about yet but thinks you might also be perfect for.

Who do you think are the breakout artists of the next few years?
Mike Vecchione, Sean O’Connor, Gabe Leidman.

You often talk about your sobriety in your act. How did sobering up effect your comedy?
I became more well rounded as a comedian, showing the softer side of myself and finding different ways to be funny. Also I no longer puke between sets.

How has the experience of being Stephen Colbert’s warm up comic (before tapings) been? Is there a different pressure or energy than a normal stand up show?
It’s been a fantastic experience. I get to see professionals work hard and prepare comedy every day. As far as the warm up, I love working with the crowd anyway so it felt natural from day one.

What’s next for Julian McCullough? Where will you be in a few years?
My comedy partner Sean O’Connor and I have a pilot in development with MTV for an original story based sitcom starring the two of us. I would love to see this show make it to air and become rich and famous.
