World famous comedy venue Carolines on Broadway and Punchline Magazine have joined forces to present the Breakout Artist Comedy Series. Each Tuesday, at Carolines in New York City, an emerging stand-up comedy star will headline their own show and prove just why they’ve been quietly building a name for themselves in the national comedy scene.

And since we here at Punchline Magazine are all about exposing the best comedians – well-known or not – we’ll be profiling each comedian taking part in the Carolines series each week. So let’s get to this week’s headliner: Kurt Metzger!

Besides regularly performing in many a NYC comedy club, Kurt Metzger’s credits include performing on Comedy Central’s Live at Gotham, Showtime’s White Boys in the Hood and as a regular on VH1’s Best Week Ever. Kurt has filmed a half-hour special for Comedy Central and appeared on Comedy Central’s Important Things with Demetri Martin, IFC’s Z-Rock and is a star the new Comedy Central program Ugly Americans.

In 2007, he was the stand out comedian at the Montreal Comedy Festival’s New Faces showcase. He has also written for Chappelle’s Show on Comedy Central and several other SpikeTV, VH1 and Comedy Central Programs.

Who do you think are the breakout artists of the next few years?
Well there’s me. That pretty much covers all the breakout artists I remotely give a shit about.

You’re now playing the role of the zombie Randall Skeffington on Comedy Central’s “Ugly Americans.” Do you find you’ve got anything in common with your zombie alter ego?
Yes, no one can stand to be in the same room with our shits.

Ever get to apply any stand up skills to voice acting?
I sure do! Voice acting gives me plenty of chances to work in my many improvs and whoopsy-daisies!

Having written for Chappelle’s Show, what was it like working with Dave?
It was like working from home writing sketches and sending them in without ever being in the office or seeing Dave in person. Exactly like that.

Do you think the show’s famously abrupt ending was a blessing or a curse?
Great question!!!!! I guess you could say it was a blessing in that it was the end of a really great, funny show and a lot of people lost their jobs, and also the network lost a lot of money!

What’s next for Kurt Metzger? Where will you be in a few years?
I’m finally going to get that AIDS test! It’s time to stop periodically calling girls I used to date and asking how much they weigh!
