• Chelsea Handler reveals ‘Chelsea Lately’ finale date, but will she ever do late night again?

Chelsea HandlerLast month, Chelsea Handler announced on Conan that she would be ending her long-running late-night series Chelsea Lately on E!. Her contract with the entertainment network would have kept her there through the end of this year. However, E! issued a release announcing that the last episode of Chelsea Lately will air on Aug. 26.

Handler has not hidden her frustrations with E! lately and when she made her announcement on Conan, not many were surprised. Rumors quickly circulated where she would end up next, having her name thrown in the ring to sit in the host chair for Late Show with David Letterman (which was filled by Stephen Colbert), Late Late Show (CBS has said they’re not interested in Handler), Comedy Central’s 11:30 slot (which went to Daily Show correspondent Larry Wilmore) and a new show on Netflix, which Handler has suggested and hinted at but denials have still arisen.

Chelsea Lately premiered in 2007 and has been a strong contender in the late night game for years. Handler’s show is the first and only show currently on air with a female host (Nikki & Sara Live was not brought back by MTV last year). She and her show have since launched countless comedians’ careers and the brash host has written several best-selling books; her latest, Uganda Be Kidding Me was released in March. Amidst all of that activity, she still performs stand-up comedy in more than 30 cities each year.

Despite everything Handler made overall positive comments upon the network’s announcement, saying about her time with Chelsea Lately, “I will always look back at my time on E! as most people look back at their time in college. I’m glad I went.” Before she bows out on Aug. 26, E! will give Chelsea Lately a month-long farewell honoring its legacy at the network. Until other late night conversations about who will fill which seat, Handler will keep everyone guessing as to where she’ll settle next, if she even does.
