• David Wain on Wet Hot American Summer sequel: We have more than a few pages done (Exclusive)

Once the hopes and chatter became official months ago when David Wain and Michael Showalter confirmed that yes, there would, indeed, be a sequel to the cult comedy classic Wet Hot American Summer, comedy nerds worldwide have been asking: When? The question, of course, comes from an emotional place, because we all know that a project like this takes time– especially since its creators are plenty busy with multiple projects. Still, when I caught up with Wain this week, I had to ask in order to satisfy my curiosity.

“It is slowly but surely in the process of being made,” Wain tells Laughspin, before I asked him if he and Showalter had at least a few pages of the script completed. “I would say we have more than a few pages,” he told me with a laugh.

And, honestly, that’s good enough for me. The fact that it’s still being worked on and hasn’t entered the we’re-shelving-it-for-now phase is heartening news!

“Seriously, we’re doing it,” Wain tells me. “I know everyone wants to know. I’m flattered and thrilled, but the creative process has its own time schedule. And meanwhile Michael [Showalter] and I are in the editing process of the movie we shot over the summer called They Came Together, which will be finishing soon and we’ll be putting it out soon and I’m very excited for people to see that.”

And although there’s been no official release date on that flick, it’s sure to be a huge success judging by its cast along, which is a who’s who of comedy nerds’ favorites: Amy Poehler, Paul Rudd, Michael Ian Black and Ed Helms are set to star. The movie was written by Wain and Showalter shortly after they finished work on 2001’s Wet Hot American Summer. The movie is centered around Rudd’s character Joel, who’s corporation is bent on shutting down a quirky knick-knack store run by Molly (Poehler).
