David Wain reveals ‘Wet Hot American Summer’ prequel details on Late Night with Seth Meyers (Video)

Wet Hot American Summer is headed to NetflixDavid Wain visited Late Night with Seth Meyers last night to promote his new movie They Came Together, which hits theaters June 27 and stars Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd. Also starring the likes of Cobie Smulders, Ed Helms and Michael Ian Black, it’s a romantic comedy that basically rails against romantic comedies. In short, we can’t wait to peep it in theaters.

But Meyers also got Wain talking about that itty, bitty project he and Michael Showalter have been working on—the Wet Hot American Summer prequel that’s set to debut on Netflix as a 10-episode television series. An additional Wet Hot American Summer project has been rumored for years, ever since the 2001 flick – starring Paul Rudd, Michael Showalter, Christopher Meloni, Janeane Garofalo and many others – became a cult comedy favorite. Wain revealed to Laughspin in November of 2012 that he was, in fact, working on a new Wet Hot American Summer. The comedy nerd world was excited to say the very least.

“It’s one of those crazy things where the movie didn’t do well when it first came out but it’s grown every year and it’s become this huge thing,” Wain told Meyers last night. “Now we’re going to do a prequel where it’s the same actors who were 30 playing 16 year olds then; now they’re going to be in their mid 40s also still playing 16 and it takes place before the events of the original movie.”

“They’ll be playing two months younger but in reality they’ll be about 14 years older,” Wain said with a smile. Check out Wain’s appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers below!
