Elizabeth Smart, who was kidnapped by Brian David Mitchell and Wanda Ileen Barzee in 2002 at the age of 14 and ultimately raped for nine months, is not your typical comedy fodder. In fact, a joke that has anything to do with sexual assault (especially jokes molded by men’s hands) regardless of who the joke’s victim is, tone or context is usually automatically blasted by the court of public opinion.
But in the hands and minds of Black-ish writer’s assistant Alexandra Decas and Melanie Kirschbaum, I bet it skates through. Directed by Behn Fannin (Bitchy Resting Face), Smart, recently uploaded to Funny Or Die, finds Kirschbaum — directionless and pantsless — and Decas — a green smoothie-drinking woman of employ — opining about the now 27-year-old ABC News correspondent, activist and victim of sexual assault. The conversation turns twisted rather quickly thanks to Melanie’s insane fascination with Elizabeth Smart.
The joke is obviously on Melanie and Alex in the end, but it’ll be interesting to see if the typical viewer can appreciate that, especially if Smart goes viral. Check it out and tell us what you think!
