• Ellen DeGeneres plays nice, crashes Twitter during Oscars hosting duties (Video)

Comedian Ellen DeGeneres returned to the Academy Awards last night to host a fun and friendly Oscars ceremony for the second time. After an edgy performance last year by host Seth MacFarlane, DeGeneres kept the jabs light-hearted and embarrassing moment exposures to a minimum (sorry, Jennifer Lawrence). She brought laughs to the evening through playful stunts and gags instead of contemptuous songs and sketches. She ordered pizzas to the ceremony and had them passed out amongst the front rows in the middle of the telecast. Did you ever think you’d see Meryl Streep eating a slice in her Oscars dress?

The daytime talk show host also attempted to break the record for most retweets by taking a monster selfie with whichever celebs she could wave over or grab. Along with Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Brad Pitt, and more, the TwitPic beat Barack Obama’s retweet record with over two million retweets and over one million favorites. It was so epic that Twitter briefly crashed shortly after it was posted. All in all, the night was goofy and silly in a change of pace not seen on the show in several years. No one’s feelings were hurt and everyone had a nice time. Whether the show’s producers choose to stay in that direction will remain to be seen. Until then, check out Ellen’s opening monologue below!
