• First Jersey City Comedy Festival set to launch this year

The Jersey City Comedy Festival is a week-long event with over 75 comedians on 20 different comedy shows…or at least it will be if you help make it happen! Garden State comedian Craig Mahoney is attempting to fund an entire comedy festival using the crowdfunding web site, Kickstarter.com. He aims to raise $5,000 by March 15 to help pay rent at a couple of the venues as well as promotional T-shirts, advertising and paying the comics.

Unlike most comedy festivals, Mahoney is not taking submissions from hundreds of comics eager to pay hefty application fees to perform. “This thing is being put on by comics for comics. I don’t want to take money from any comedian for submission,” he says. “I don’t want anyone worrying about winning a contest, or forcing new talent into bringer shows. I just want the comics to worry about showing up, doing a great set, and having great time.”

The festival will showcase both established national headlining comedians as well as rising stars of the New York and New Jersey comedy scenes. Some of the vets set to rock the mike are Todd Barry, newly-annointed MTV television host Nikki Glaser and Myq Kaplan. Others are coming off of great late night television debuts such as Mark Normand and Mike Lawrence.

The festival will take place over the course of six nights at many local Jersey City staples such as The Art House, The Distillery Art Gallery, The Lamp Post, and LITM gallery. To celebrate the spectrum of comedy, Mahoney will also feature sketch and improv groups and artwork created by comedians.

More festivals, more events, and more shows, means more stage time for comics and more opportunities for the lay people to indulge in affordable and fun stand-up comedy! Funds raised will help keep many of the shows either free or at a low price. Take a moment to give even just $1 to help fund a kick-ass comedy festival!
