• Flight of the Conchords star Bret McKenzie writing movie with singing dragons, monsters

While he’s prepping to reunite with musical comedy partner Jemaine Clement this summer – as Flight of the Conchords will co-headline the traveling Oddball Comedy & Curiosity Festival with Dave Chappelle – Bret McKenzie has revealed he’s writing a feature-length musical inspired by The Princess Bride.

“I’m in the middle of a script for a kind of—it hasn’t got a name yet but it’s a fairy tale comedy musical, sort of akin to Labyrinth or something like that,” he tells Collider. “I’m developing and that script’s halfway through. James Bobin’s helping me. I’m the official writer but we’re developing it. I want to make a comedy musical with singing dragons and monsters and stuff. [It’s] live-action, so it would be a mixture of The Muppets and The Princess Bride.”

McKenzie, of course, is best known to comedy fans for his work in Flight of the Conchords, the live act that became a hit series on HBO. But he’s since gone on to become a force in the film world, snagging an Oscar for writing “Man or Muppet,” which appeared in the Muppets movie in 2011. He’ll have even more of his songs featured in the sequel, set to hit theaters in March of next year.
