• FX’s The League renewed for seventh — and final — fantasy football season

Katie Aselton of FX series The LeagueFXX’s fantasy football comedy series The League will return next year— for its seventh and final season. The series revolving around a group of friends’ outrageous antics surrounding their fantasy football league will come to a close with a final 13-episodes in 2015. The League stars Nick Kroll, Steve Rannazzisi, Mark Duplass, Paul Scheer, Jon Lajoie and Katie Aselton (pictured) with frequent appearances from Seth Rogen as Dirty Randy and Jason Mantzoukas as crazy cuñado Rafi. The series was created by husband and wife Jeff and Jackie Schaffer, who seem happy to have been on the air this long. “Most players in the NFL don’t make it seven seasons, and most TV shows even less so,” said Jackie Schaffer. “We want to thank FX Networks and all our Eskimo brothers and sisters. NFL teams would be lucky to have fans as diehard as ours.”

The League, which helped last year’s launch of comedy channel FXX when it jumped over from FX, was impressive due to being only semi-scripted. It relies on a framework storyline that has the actors, many of whom had a background in improv or stand-up comedy prior to the show, improvise their lines for the whole scene. The League was also popular amongst the NFL’s players and personalities, with many pro athletes making cameos: from Kevin’s mancrush Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler to meddling Houston Texans defensive end JJ Watt. How will it end after this year’s explosive season finale (see video)? Says co-creator Jeff Schaffer, “Spoiler Alert: We already know how it will all end— with credits and the theme song.”
