Netflix has renewed Grace and Frankie for a sixth season due out next year. Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin have ageless appeal as the titular pair of unwitting friends brought closer together under unusual circumstances.
We last left Grace and Frankie breaking out of a retirement home (“assisted living community”) after getting fed up with the childish rules and policies. Stealing back their own belongings—including Frankie’s beloved toaster—the two bust out only to discover their children have sold the house.
Based on the trailer, Season 5 promises a beach wedding, weed gummies, and a Parent Trap-like situation. Frankie boldly claims that she’s “getting back to what I used to be: uncompromising, dangerous” and “acting like a grown woman who is finally living by her own rules.” Grace finally realizes that she’s “earned the right to take [her] sweet, fucking time.
Grace and Frankie debuted in 2015 with a show starring actors who wouldn’t usually appeal to the popular 25-45 demographic. Octogenarian Fonda leads the show with Tomlin, who will be 80 when the show’s sixth season drops. Co-stars Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston are both 78-years-old. Yet the show maintains an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has garnered plenty of awards recognition with SAG, Golden Globe, and Emmy nominations every year.
It seems like as long as the stars can perform in their old age, the streaming service will keep putting them in high-speed golf cart chases.
