• John Oliver Ferguson coverage outstanding, calls out Jon Belmar, James Knowles, more

John Oliver talks about Ferguson, MissouriJohn Oliver has once again brought clarity, humor and unmatched intelligence to a national issue on Last Week Tonight— this time dissecting unrest in Ferguson, Missouri over Michael Brown, an unarmed teenager who was shot at least six times and killed by white police officer Darren Wilson.

“This whole story is depressingly familiar,” John Oliver says at the top of the main segment of last night’s episode of Last Week Tonight on HBO. “And there are so many unanswered questions as to why an officer would shoot an unarmed teenager. What is absolutely clear is that the police have handled everything since then terribly. And the tone-deafness began with this.” Oliver then tosses to video of St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar saying, “It was more than just a couple but I don’t think it was many more than that,” addressing the number of times Michael Brown was shot.

In the 15-minute clip, we also find Ferguson Mayor James Knowles playing down Ferguson’s racial tension and Oliver deftly dissecting the federal government’s policy of arming tiny American town police forces the same they would U.S. Amry soldiers fighting in the Middle East.
