• Kelsey Grammer, Martin Lawrence are ‘Partners’ for FX comedy premiering Aug. 4

Martin LawrenceThe Martin Lawrence and Kelsey Grammar FX sitcom Partners will showcase the unusual pairing on Monday, August 4 when it premieres on the cable network. Partners pairs Lawrence and Grammar as Chicago lawyers from very different backgrounds as they face their own personal crises. The show was given a 10/90 deal (made popular by Charlie Sheen’s Anger Mangement), meaning FX ordered 10 episodes up front. If Partners meets certain ratings requirements, FX will immediately order 90 more episodes. The 10/90 deal streamlines the syndication process, guaranteeing that a show will have enough episodes to go into syndication regardless of subsequent ratings.

This will be Martin Lawrence’s return to a regular sitcom since his Fox sitcom Martin ended in 1997. He made a pilot for CBS that never panned out in 2012 after making a string of popular comedy movies like the Big Momma’s House trilogy, Wild Hogs and Rebound. Kelsey Grammar, also the former star of a hit broadcast network sitcom, has had a few false starts getting back into television after the Emmy Award-winning Cheers and Frasier. The 2007 Fox sitcom Back to You was cancelled after only one season and another attempt on ABC called Hank was cancelled after only five episodes aired in 2009. Grammer did show off his dramatic skills on the Starz premium cable channel in 2011 and 2012 playing a fictional Chicago mayor on Boss, for which he won a Golden Globe. Unfortunately, Boss did not return for a third season. He’s also in the new X-Men movie, X-Men: Days of Future Past as the older Dr. Hank McCoy (a.k.a. Beast).

FX will air two back-to-back episodes of Partners, much like it did with the beginning of season 4 of Louie, from 9-10pm EST for five consecutive weeks.
