Many young grade school students’ lives were changed the day they discovered Dav Pilkey’s Captain Underpants at school book fairs. The popular book series follows a couple of naughty prank-pulling fourth graders and their principal Mr. Krupp, whose accidental alter-ego saves the world clad only in his underwear. Captain Underpants has saved the world many times from people like Dr. Diaper and The Turbo-Toilet 2000. The 10-book series, which began in 1997, has sold more than 50 million copies in the United States and has been released in over 20 languages worldwide. Three more editions are planned through 2016, despite controversy over the scatalogical humor in the somewhat-illustrated books. The books boast low-brow humor filled with fart jokes, “Smell-O-Vision,” and general toilet humor. Many schools have banned the series from its libraries.
Regardless, Dreamworks has been developing a script for an animated adaptation with The Muppets scribe Nick Stoller. Now they’ve announced the names of the high level comedy stars lending their voices to the project. Comedy superstar Kevin Hart and Wolf of Wall Street actor and comedian Thomas Middleditch will play fourth-graders George Beard and Harold Hutchins, respectively. The Hangover star Ed Helms will voice the duel identity Mr. Krupp/Captain Underpants. Jordan Peele has been tapped to voice Melvin, a “nerdy nemesis” to Geroge and Harold. The film’s villain, Professor Pippy Pee-Pee Poopypants (we know, try not to giggle) will be voiced by none other than comedian Nick Kroll.
