Key & Peele stars Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele will finally make their starring role debuts on the big screen in Keanu. The stars of the popular Comedy Central sketch series will work on their first project with New Line Cinemas. Keanu centers around the quest to recover a kitten named Keanu who has been kidnapped by a tough drug-dealing street gang. Peele wrote the script with Key & Peele writer Alex Rubens. Shooting is set to begin in Los Angeles next spring. Key and Peele will also produce.
Lots of speculation has been made about films starring the Key & Peele duo. There were reports that they will produce (and potentially star in) a Police Academy reboot. They’ve also been linked to an untitled Judd Apatow film and a spinoff movie Mr. Garvey, aka Substitute Teacher, one of their beloved characters from their Comedy Central show. But for now, it appears that their on-screen debut together will be with Keanu. “We were happy that they were open to doing it at a studio, particularly ours,” New Line President of Production Richard Brener said. “Everything they do is funny.” Peele assured fans that no matter what, “None of our Key & Peele characters will be harmed in the making of this film.”
