• Louis C.K. inks amazing deal with FX, continues doing things his way

Louis C.K. is the king of getting “the special deal.” He famously sold his hit show Louie to FX with complete creative control by agreeing to an extremely small budget. FX Networks has now signed an exclusive deal with the stand-up comedian for a multi-year development deal. C.K. and his Pig Newton production company will develop pilots exclusively for FX and its outlet channels, such as FXX. Seeming like the ultimate deal for any comic, C.K. will have the option to write or direct any of the projects as well as serve as executive producer.

Not only that, the deal does not cover future seasons of Louie, whose fourth season begins next May, so decisions about his prize project will remain separate from the overall deal. On top of that, C.K. will still be allowed to go outside of FX Networks for comedy specials. So he can still self-produce and release specials through his website or air another hour-long comedy event on HBO. Essentially, Louis C.K. can do what he wants, where he wants, how he wants…so long as all his TV series go through FX.

The move demonstrates a strong confidence in the comedian’s work and shows a desire to bend its comedy programming in a unique direction, having also renewed Jim Jefferies’ Legit, a hilarious yet somewhat dark comedy series, earlier this year. “Working with Louis C.K. has been one of the most rewarding and enjoyable experiences of my career,” noted FX Networks head John Landgraf. “I am thrilled that our relationship with Louis and Blair Breard [Louie executive producer] will continue for the foreseeable future through this deal.” Louie has racked up 11 Primetime Emmy award nominations in three seasons, winning the comedian an Emmy for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series in 2012.

Hopefully C.K. will find a way to get a movie made his way to make up for the infamous Pootie Tang debacle.
