Moontower Comedy Festival, day 3: Janeane Garofalo, Michael Ian Black, Chelsea Peretti!

AUSTIN – Day three of the Moontower Comedy Festival showered audiences with far more outstanding talent than rain, though both made appearances all over the city. Much more astonishing than water falling from the sky – a true Texas rarity – was the hodgepodge of megastar comedians who bathed festival attendees in laughs by the bucketful.

While the IFC series Maron unveiled a sneak-peak screening and hilarity heavyweights like Greg Fitzsimmons and Chris Hardwick took their turns at the stage, Laughspin headed over to the Paramount early to take in the triple-threat lineup of Chelsea Peretti, Michael Ian Black and Judah Friedlander, whose trucker hat, bright yellow t-shirt, and suave denim jacket all proudly proclaimed his “World Champion” status.

JudahFriedlander 350Naturally, our gal Chels and our main man MIB both completely killed – she with her winsome, irreverent perspective on everything from texting while driving to the male comedian propensity for humping stools onstage; and he with his trademark deadpan delivery that never fails to leave comedy fans smiling, even as the next witticism is being unrolled with impeccable comic timing.

To our great satisfaction, the World Champ himself took to the mic last and smashed out a set disguised as a presidential campaign platform. What is candidate Friedlander’s answer to the gun control debate? Why, karate, obviously. To our great surprise and delight, the Champ spent several minutes after the show mingling outside with fans, and even took some time out to chat comedy (and Mexican food) with us ( see photo of myself and photographer Jennifer Udan).

It’s hard to imagine topping such an incredible serving of comedic genius, but our next show managed to bring a comedy power-packed punch as, if not more, fierce than what preceded it. Closing out the festival’s third evening were two iconic superstars: comedy world champions in their own right. We’re speaking here of Brian Posehn (pictured below) and Janeane Garofalo. Don’t bother adjusting the brightness settings on your iPad – you read that right.

As can be expected, both long-time stand-up veterans took their audience on a midnight journey that encompassed the kind of glory we’ve come to presuppose out of any performance Posehn or Garofalo might undertake. Indeed, watching these two in peak form was an experience no less than being immersed in the art of comedy at its very finest. With Posehn’s grumpy ex-stoner nerd wisdom and Garofalo’s stream-of-consciousness sensibilities, not a single soul under the house lights could have left the venue dissatisfied.

Following on the heels of round after round of total perfection, we can only guess blindly at what spectacular surprises lay in store for closing night. Stick around for more funny of the fabulous kind.
