Netflix announced a premiere date for the upcoming Natasha Lyonne series Russian Doll. The dark comedy series is set to debut on February 1. Netflix confirmed the news in a video posted Friday morning.
Lyonne, who previously played Nicky Nichols on Orange is the New Black, is both the star and the executive producer of Russian Doll. Lyonne plays Nadia, a young woman who is the guest of honor at a never-ending party in New York City. Cindy Holland, the Vice President of Original Content for Netflix, previously described the show as “an ambitious and uniquely formatted comedy that will have viewers guessing as much as they will be laughing.”
Other announced cast members include Yul Vazquez, Greta Lee, Charlie Barnett, and Elizabeth Ashley, with Lyonne’s OITNB co-star Dascha Polanco and Chloë Sevigny set to guest star.
Amy Poehler and Leslye Headland are co-creators of Russian Doll, and both Lyonne and Headland serve as directors, as well. Jamie Babbit also serves as director. In fact, the entire writing and directing team is made up of women.
“So excited to get cracking with the intensely brilliant Leslye Headland, the GOAT with a heart of gold Amy Poehler, and Netflix, the safe haven I’ve been searching for since the ’80s,” said Lyonne in a previous statement. “Deeply moved to work with such heavy hitters and to share our show with the world.”
