• NBC cancels Hank Azaria’s new comedy “Free Agents”

Despite an aggressive Twitter campaign launched Monday by the show’s star Hank Azaria and carried on through yesterday — with most of the cast and even friends of the cast joining in — NBC has canceled Free Agents. The tweet pleas asking folks to tune in to last night’s episode was not enough.

Although the program garnered mostly solid reviews, Free Agents was pitted against some stiff competition. The show, a remake of a UK program centered around a public relations staff — premiered on Sept. 12 to a respectable 6.3 million viewers. But the following week, going against mainstream reality show favorites The X Factor and Survivor, Free Agents garnered only 3.9 million viewers. The viewership for last night’s episode — about 3 million — apparently wasn’t strong enough to convince NBC executives to give the series a full order.

Free Agents was a huge win for the comedy community as it co-starred a handful of well-respected stand-up comedians and comedy performers who, for the most part, have not landed major mainstream success: Natasha Leggero, Al Madrigal, Mo Mandel and Joe Lo Truglio all co-starred opposite the better known Azaria and Kathryn Hahn.
