• New Lewis Black special ‘Old Yeller’ will be broadcast live

For his ninth stand-up comedy special, Lewis Black is doing things a little differently. On Aug. 24, Black will perform in Atlantic City at 9:30 pm ET and the show will be broadcast live across multiple platforms. Titled Lewis Black: Old Yeller – Live At The Borgata, the show will be available as a pay-per-view event, according to Deadline. Available in standard and high definitions, Old Yeller will be available on the following services: Xfinity, Time Warner Cable, Cox Communications, DirecTV, Dish, Cablevision, Charter Communications, AT&T U-Verse and Verizon FiOS. It will be the first comedy special to be distributed this way. Though It’s too early to tell, I imagine the special will eventually be available through Netflix and/or a traditional cable network like Comedy Central or HBO– or perhaps Epix, who exclusively premiered his last two specials.

In March, I interviewed Black for The Laughspin Podcast and we talked about how he would release his next special. When I asked if he would ever consider the direct-to-consumer model that many comedians have adopted over the last two years, he explained he didn’t think it was a viable option for him. “I’ve thought about it, but my problem is that I have an audience that is in range from age 15 to 80,” he told me. “I have three generations showing up— and two generations are not going to watch it like that. I’m not going to sit there…I’ll sit there for 10 minutes [watching on a computer]. If I’m on a plane, sure. But otherwise, fuck you.” You can listen to the entire interview below.
