• New York comedian debriefs 101 rejections on Today

New York comic and Laughspin contributor Emily Winter impressed NBC’s Today show Monday morning with her ability to handle rejection. Winter recently published a piece in The New York Times about her 2018 New Years Resolution to get rejected 100 times—she closed last year with 101 sought-after noes.

Al Roker and Sheinelle Jones spoke with Winter about how she quit her stable job to pursue comedy and how she resolved to get 100 rejections in a year. “It was fun and scary!” she told Laughspin. “I kept telling myself that if I peed my pants, no one would be able to tell on camera, and I could deal with it after the segment.”

The charming, self-deprecating stand-up embraced failure and used a spreadsheet to track her submissions to festivals, magazines, and more. The first rejection hurt, but Winter also began to receive acceptances and a fresh perspective in an industry known for saying no.
