• Patrice O’Neal documentary Better Than You launches $125,000 Indiegogo campaign (Video)

Creators of the Patrice O’Neal documentary Better Than You announced today that they have started an Indiegogo campaign to generate funds for the film that will detail the life and career of a man many called “the most honest and unique voice in comedy.”

“When Patrice passed away, I committed myself to completing projects for him that he had in the works,” said Von Decarlo, Better Than You producer and O’Neal’s fiancée of 10 years. “I also committed myself to doing any and every thing that I could do to preserve his legacy.” Producers are seeking to raise $125,000 on Indiegogo by May 1 to support the feature when it goes into production this summer. Among the pledge perks for the documentary are limited edition T-Shirts, tickets to the premiere screening and after-party, and a pair of lifetime admission tickets to The Stand, one of New York’s best comedy clubs. Jim Norton, Colin Quinn, Dane Cook, Bill Burr, Rich Vos, Denis Leary, Jay Mohr, Greg “Opie” Hughes, Anthony Cumia as well as O’Neal’s mother Georgia are expected to make appearances in the documentary.

O’Neal, who died on Nov. 29, 2011 due to complications from a stroke, appeared in numerous Comedy Central and HBO stand-up specials, as well as on television series like The Office, Chappelle’s Show and Arrested Development. “Patrice had a unique voice, and he wasn’t afraid to use it,” says director Mark Farrell. “His relentless pursuit of the bare truth through laughter was a strong beacon in the comedy world. I’m looking forward to telling his story.”
