The documentary stars Mike Epps, Lily Tomlin, Tiffany Haddish, his former agent Ron De Blasio, and widow Jennifer Lee Pryor—who also produced the film—among others. The film is part of the larger I Am series from Paramount.
“I Am offers a glimpse into the personal lives of celebrities, as told by their family and friends,” says the network’s website.
Indeed, the Richard Pryor documentary promises to cover the late comic’s entire life, from his rocky—to say the least—childhood in Peoria, Illinois to his greatest heights in the entertainment industry. Those unfamiliar with the Blazing Saddles star’s material, the episode will also feature clips of his stand-up.
The film is directed by Jesse James Miller, who made Chasing Evel: The Robbie Kinevel Story in 2017. The series has focused episodes on prominent figures in politics and entertainment, including Martin Luther King Jr. and John F. Kennedy Jr. The I Am series has featured other prominent comedians. Paramount ran documentaries on both Sam Kinison and Chris Farley.
For those who do not have a taste for documentaries, the Richard Pryor biopic starring Mike Epps, who bears a scary resemblance to Pryor in a recent photo, is also set to release sometime in 2019. Is It Something I said? shares the same title as Pryor’s 1975 album.
The last documentary about the Grammy winner, Richard Pryor: Omit the Logic, came out in 2013 and also featured interviews from comics and loved ones.
