Derek Noakes is returning to Netflix one last time for a one-hour heartfelt Derek special. Ricky Gervais reprises his British retirement home caretaker one last time in the United States on April 3. It already aired in the U.K. in December.
Derek captivated American audiences after its original British runs on Channel 4. Gervais even earned an Emmy and Golden Globe nomination for the show’s first season. The special arrives in place of a third season of the hit comedy series, as the show’s star-writer-director is working on a David Brent of The Office spin-off movie. English shows don’t go on for years and years like they do in America and Ricky Gervais explained his thoughts on not doing another full season. “I usually do two seasons and a special,” he told Deadline.com. “A third season can ruin the first two…I always think if there’s two seasons left, do one. If there’s one season left, do a special. If there’s not barely a special, don’t do anything.”
The Derek special prepares for a wedding and lots of changes, including a baby and a new job for Tom (Brett Goldstein). It seems like the characters are ready to move on as Ricky Gervais and the show’s fans will, too. The Derek special will premiere exclusively on Netflix in the States at midnight on April 3.
