• Rob Corddry: ‘I’m surprised Childrens Hospital is even on TV’ and more from the Creative Arts Emmys

While audiences and nominees alike must wait until Sunday for the Primetime Emmy Awards, this past weekend’s the Creative Arts Emmys were handed out. While the awards mainly focuses on the technical and behind-the-scenes side of television, comedy actors and writers were well represented with Saturday Night Live leading the way with four awards including Jimmy Fallon’s stint as a guest host. The iconic sketch show also snagged awards for directing, hairstyling for a multi-camera series and technical direction.

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart walked away with its usual award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series. Rob Corddry and the crew of Childrens Hospital took home the award for Special Class Programming which was a surprise to those on the show, but perhaps not to the fans of the bizarre Adult Swim staple. “I’m surprised we won,” Corddry said. “I’m surprised the show is even on TV,” Corddry told reporters about the win for short-form live action special class programming. “The fact that this category even exists is pretty great because this is what everyone in comedy is doing; really fringe stuff with friends.”

One unexpected winner was Nickelodeon’s Penguins of Madagascar which beat out Futurama, The Simpsons, American Dad and Bob’s Burgers for outstanding animated program. Newcomer 2 Broke Girls also won an award for art direction in a multi-camera series and HBO’s hit from Lena Dunham and Judd Apatow Girls snagged the comedy casting award. And Kathy Bates beat out Maya Rudolph, Elizabeth Banks, Margaret Cho and Dot Marie Jones for the best actress guest spot in a comedy; Bates played the ghost of Charlie Sheen’s character on Two And A Half Men.

The Reelz Channel will air a two hour, edited version of the ceremony this Saturday at 8 pm. The Primetime Emmys, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, airs the following night on ABC at 7 pm EST.
