• Samantha Bee revives Not the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner

Samantha Bee is getting ready to roast President Donald Trump. No, she has not officially joined the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) and she is not hosting their annual gala dinner in April. Instead, she’s bringing back her Not the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on the same night because the WHCA “doesn’t have the balls to face a comedian.” In a video posted on Monday, Bee says, “Someone’s gotta roast that motherfucker and if they won’t do it, I will.”

On Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, she announced that her event will celebrate the First Amendment. According to a press release, the dinner will feature a combination of, “signature comedy, celebrity guests, and better food than last time.” The teaser shows the comic preparing a feast with the President’s favorite foods—including fried chicken nuggets, pizza, and of course, hamberders.

President Trump has avoided the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner

White House Correspondents' Association Dinner speaker Ron ChernowTrump broke with tradition when he did not attend the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner in 2017 or 2018. The sitting president typically attends, with members of the press, and at least pretends to laugh at the jokes. Of course, Trump has a complicated relationship with the “fake news” media and has previously tweeted displeasure about being the butt of jokes.

In November, Trump tweeted that “for the first time in decades, they will have an author instead of a comedian” and implied that he may attend this year. The day before that tweet, the WHCA announced that historical author Ron Chernow will be 2019’s featured speaker.

The WHCA announcement came after last year’s event featuring Michelle Wolf, who slammed the president and his press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. The WHCA distanced themselves from her jokes and released a statement that her monologue was not in the “spirit” of the program’s mission.

Samantha Bee bucks back with Not the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner

Bee also held her own dinner program in 2017. That event aired on TBS on the night of the WHCA dinner, with an uncensored version broadcast on Twitter. Her event featured special guest Will Ferrell as George W. Bush and reportedly raised $200,000 for the Committee to Protect Journalists. This year’s event will benefit the same charity. The 2017 dinner featured a variety of segments including sketches, pre-recorded bits, and comedians such as Patton Oswalt and Kumail Nanjiani roasting President Trump.

Bee’s special will air on Saturday, April 27 at 10:00 p.m. ET on TBS. She is taping the special the day before at Washington, D.C.’s DAR Constitution Hall—just blocks away from the White House.

Full Frontal with Samantha Bee airs on Wednesdays at 10:30 p.m. ET on TBS.
