• Bo Burnham, Brian Posehn at Gilda’s LaughFest deliver from opposite ends of the spectrum

GRAND RAPIDS — By Saturday night’s end here at Gilda’s LaughFest I was happily bathed in classically executed musical comedy theatrics set inside a gorgeous 1,500-seat venue and alternatively a persistent stream of dick-and-fart jokes delivered from a stage housed in a gritty, few-hundred-seat rock club. The experience proved that, regardless of subject matter and presentation, comedy of any shape — so long as it’s in a master’s hands —

GRAND RAPIDS — Minnesota comedian Tommy Ryman was crowned Best of the Midwest — and was handed a check for $2,500 — late last night here as he edged out nine other comedians in what has become an annual highlight of Gilda’s LaughFest, now in its fifth year. A semifinalist during the most recent season of Last Comic Standing, the bespectacled,  buttoned-down Ryman presented a near perfect mix of unassuming

Gilda’s LaughFest review: Lewis Black makes our imminent demise fun

GRAND RAPIDS – Despite the insanely vigorous national touring schedule – including many stops in Michigan – he’s maintained over the years, it has been a long time since Lewis Black has set foot in Grand Rapids. Leave it to the organizers at Gilda’s LaughFest (of which the show was a part) to change that. But as he told the crowd of 2,200 people at the DeVos Performance Hall last

Gilda’s Laughfest breaks fake mustache world record

To kick off the third annual Gilda’s Laughfest in Grand Rapids yesterday, organizers attempted to break the Guinness world record for – wait for it – the largest gathering of people wearing fake mustaches. And while the folks at Guinness will need to certify those efforts, officials counted 1,544 people with fake mustaches, breaking the previous record of 648, which went down last year at a St Louis Rams event.

Lewis Black, Bill Burr, DL Hughley and more to play Laughfest; tickets on sale Nov. 30

When Laughfest hits Grand Rapids, MI this coming March, it will mark the 10-day festival’s third installment, yet it’s wise beyond its years. Having already welcomed some of the biggest names in comedy (think Bill Cosby, Betty White, Jim Gaffigan) into the close-knit city during its first two colossal efforts, organizers this year had the challenge of producing an event to meet the comedy world’s expectations. And judging by those

Video interview: Lisa Landry at Laugh Fest

Earlier today over a nice little brunch provided by the Laugh Fest folks, I chatted with comedian Lisa Landry, who landed on our Top 10 Comedy Albums list in 2008. She’s just released a brand-spanking new live DVD, called Brazillionaire. Inaugural LaughFest boasts Birbiglia, Cosby, Cho; will benefit cancer patients

Grand Rapids, Michigan isn’t exactly the first place you think of when you’re mentally running down the nation’s biggest stand-up comedy cities (you guys don’t do that?). So, when I first heard a few months ago about a new comedy festival Gilda’s LaughFest taking place in the aforementioned town, I was a bit skeptical. I was wrong to feel that way. These laugh wranglers have their shit together. The 10-day
