• Community recap: Custody Law and Eastern European Diplomacy

Community: Custody Law and Eastern European Diplomacy I’m not gonna lie—I wasn’t terribly psyched when I learned that we were Chang-ing things up this week (hi-yo!). Chang’s kind of a one-note dude. A funny one-note dude, but still…a one-note dude. So yeah, I wasn’t so happy. I was, you might even say, disa-Chang-ed? (Last terrible Chang pun, promise.) Anyway, on to the recap! We open on an Annie-organized baby shower

South By Southwest Comedy: Day 4, with Ansari, Maron, Benson and more

AUSTIN– The fourth and final day of comedy events during SXSW Interactive (more comedy comes this weekend) kicked off with a taping of Marc Maron’s WTF podcast. Before the guests took the stage, Maron chatted a bit about his time in Austin and at SXSW. And man, did he have the Interactive folks pegged: nowhere else, he noted, had he seen such a “focused and intelligent line of bullshit.” Few

South By Southwest Comedy: Day 3

AUSTIN– Day three began with perhaps the most appropriately titled podcast for the SXSW crowd: Chris Hardwick’s Nerdist podcast. Before bringing out their special guest, Hardwick, Jonah Ray, and Matt Mira chided Austin residents’ penchants for the ironic mustache. The audience, at roughly 85 percent Hipster, was down with that critique. Before long, they brought out a very special guest: Daily Show writer and correspondent John Oliver, who hosted an

South By Southwest Comedy: Day 2

AUSTIN– Unsurprisingly, day two of SXSW’s comedy offerings did not disappoint. The evening began with a live Comedy Death Ray Radio podcast taping featuring none other than Pee-Wee Herman creator Paul Reubens. Anyone hoping to see a live interview with Pee-Wee would be disappointed. Reubens dressed comfortably in jeans and a green button up shirt instead of donning his infamous gray suit; he fielded questions from CDR producer Scott Aukerman

Oh, let’s just say that you don’t want

South By Southwest Comedy: Day 1

AUSTIN– South by Southwest’s comedy offerings began last night and blended the best of comedy and nerdery. Kicking off the night was a doubleheader of Doug Benson’s “Doug Loves Movies” podcast, first featuring guests Anthony Jeselnik, Kevin Pollak and Dave Foley. In true Texas fashion, the show was all good vibes. When Foley ran out of his Shiner Bock brew, a thoughtful audience member fetched refills, and other audience members

A glance back at the South Beach Comedy Festival; Wanda Sykes, Adam Carolla and more

Comedy Central’s South Beach Comedy Festival recently hit lower Miami Beach like an entertainment hurricane, providing a new nightlife option for local residents bored to tears with the 85 degree winters, golden beaches and clubs full of physically perfect people. On Wednesday, March 2, I took in the first show of the festival – Doug Benson at the Colony Theatre. In all fairness, it was 7:30 on a Wednesday night,

    Portlandia season finale recap: “Baseball”

Medium shot: a non-threatening clean-cut dude explains that Portland has a 12% unemployment rate. Cut to: a local couple continues his train of thought. Then–cut–a random woman continues their thought. Cut. Some other dude takes it from there, then–cut!—yet another picks up where he left off. Cut to Fred Armisen’s ubiquitous bike messenger dude chiming in, then, the jump cuts get spastic, and one of the never-ending parade of Portlandians

30 Rock recap: TGS Hates Women

Episode : “TGS Hates Women” Liz Lemon’s opinions as a feminist have been no secret on 30 Rock over the last five seasons. Sidenotes about Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Anna Howard Shaw and, of course, the Sugarbaker women, have crept up over the years to indicate Liz’s love of lady power. This episode tested Liz’s beliefs, after a pop-culture focused feminist blog (aptly titled ‘Joan of Snark’…genius) claims that TGS “hates

Community recap: Intro to Political Science

Episode: “Intro to Political Science” This week, we’re thankfully back in the Greendale study lounge, free from the bedridden clutches of Pierce the Puppeteer. He’s fresh out of rehab (where he got a look at Tom Sizemore’s junk and HILARIOUSLY dubbed him Tom Sizeless), and that, we can only hope, is the end of the Pierce-as-drug-addict story line. (In fact, do you mind if I ignore him for the rest

    Portlandia recap: “Blunderbuss”

Portlandia, the deft and very funny sketch comedy brainchild of SNL-er Fred Armisen and former Sleater-Kinney member, Carrie Brownstein, smells like a combination of a dusty bookshop and a strong organic espresso. It wears combat boots, bathes only when necessary, and eats local—as local even as the neighborhood Dumpster. Friday’s episode opened with an epic battle of promotional flyer-posting—a thumb war of sorts between aggro promoter of Major Local Event

30 Rock recap: It’s Never Too Late For Now

What does every self-respecting career woman with a love for sandwiches do when she breaks up with Matt Damon? She buys a fannypack and gives up on any hope for a romantic future. This week’s 30 Rock highlighted just that event in our dear Liz Lemon’s life. After breaking up with crazy-dreamboat-pilot Carol, Liz pops a banana clip in her hair, rocks sweatpants tucked into Ugg boots, and buys a

    Community recap: “Intermediate Documentary Filmmaking”

This week, Community bequeaths more of its sticky goodness all over us. So let’s get to it! Episode: “Intermediate Documentary Filmmaking” We open slightly disoriented. What’s with the weird lighting, the strange camera angles…? Oh, we’re in Abed’s documentary. Okay, cool. Abed takes a meta moment to explaining what’s going on—a hospitalized Pierce has requested that Ay-bed document his life—and why he’s doing it this way: It’s easier to explain
