• Awkwafina, Rory Scovel land Comedy Central shows as network hunts for hits

Awkwafina and Rory Scovel are coming to Comedy Central with their very own scripted TV shows. Comedy Central announced in a press release that they are greenlighting eight episodes of Scovel’s Robbie and 10 episodes of Awkwafina’s self-titled series. Both Scovel and Awkwafina had break-out performances this year. Scovel became an indie darling on TruTV’s Those Who Can’t, but appeared on the big screen opposite Amy Schumer in I Feel

SXSW Comedy, Day 3: Brett Gelman, Jay Larson, Team Coco and more!

AUSTIN — As you may have heard, Austin’s motto is “Keep Austin Weird,” referring to the fun eccentricities of its most colorful people and places. But the same could have been said for one of the oddest performances I can remember seeing in the past three years of covering SXSW: Brett Gelman’s Gelmania. Allow me to set the stage: Gelman stands front and center amid smoke, flashing lights, and a

Rory Scovel lands a television deal with ABC, and why that makes sense

Somewhere between the relative progressiveness (and hence, poor ratings) of NBC and the over-the-top pandering strategy CBS has employed to great commercial effect, there lies ABC. And that’s exactly where Rory Scovel has landed, as the network has inked a development deal that finds the rising stand-up comedian starring in the multi-camera Big Children, centered on Scovel’s character— an only child in his thirties forced to live with his parents

‘The Half-Hour’ premieres Friday on Comedy Central with Rory Scovel, Michael Palascak (Videos)

One of the reasons I became obsessed with stand-up comedy was Comedy Central Presents, Comedy Central’s long-running series of 30-minute stand-up specials, which shined a light on great up and coming comedians. I even made my own “mixtape” of sorts, where one VHS tape housed CCPs from Greg Giraldo, Nick Swardson, Mitch Hedberg, Zach Galifianakis and more. Don’t make fun. This was long before these things were available on iTunes.

    Rory Scovel: “Dilation” (Review)

How to describe Rory Scovel: think Bert Kreischer meets Anthony Jeselnik. That is, picture a storyteller, philosopher, and absurdist, whom you can’t quite decide whether he’s a nice guy or a huge asshole. Either way, he’s pretty damn funny. And if that description sounds good to you, you’ll dig Dilation, Scovel’s debut album. A perfect example of Scovel’s brand of comedy comes on “Walk” when he berates people who think

Rory Scovel successfully does stand-up in total darkness, accompanied by live music

When performing comedy in front of a live audience, it’s strongly recommended that the stage be lit. If specifically performing stand-up, it’s also recommended that indie rock music not be playing during the performance. Given how obvious those two observations are, going against both of them would be, in most cases, just plain daft. Leave it up to one Rory Scovel to prove all that wrong. After pulling off one

The AV Club reports that a sketch group from Cleveland, Last Call Cleveland, alleges Conan swiped the premise for a simultaneous stand-up comedy performance starring comedians Jon Dore and Rory Scovel. Their demanded compensation? Allowing the sketch group to

Reggie Watts: Master of the absurd

Nobody’s quite sure what to make of Reggie Watts— not even Reggie Watts. This happens when you’ve never done the same show twice. Watts, the New York-via-Seattle absurdist-via-music, is doing what hardly anybody dares in the world of stand-up comedy — making it all up as he goes. Armed with a loop machine and a willingness to let his mind wander far from the dock, Watts creates sprawling, ear-tickling songs
