The upcoming season of The Office will be its last

After the conclusion of its ninth season this year, The Office will be gone forever. Though the show will be missed, after the departure of Steve Carell (included in the photo above) and plummeting ratings, it’s time for the show to go gracefully. And The Office showrunner through its first five seasons, Greg Daniels has returned for the final season in place of Paul Liberstein.

“This year feels like the last chance to really go out together and make an artistic ending for the show that pays off a lot of the stuff that matters most to fans,” Daniels said today. “This will be the last season of The Office. And we’re planning a very big exciting last season. We’re going to have a lot of faces coming back … There are a lot of things that I’ve personally been wanting to do since season two … All questions will be answered this year. We’re going to see who’s behind the documentary … Now that we know we have an end date we can blow things up and take some chances and it will be very freeing, creatively.”

Indeed, this season could be very different, since the the writers know they can take risks without fear of cancellation– though they still have to deal with a possibly angry fanbase if they push it too far.

A few things we know about the upcoming season:

– Newcomers Jake Lacy and Clark Duke will play employees in charge of all the customer service complaints Kelly Kapoor (Kaling)’s character let build up throughout the her time at Dunder Mifflin.

– Roy (David Denman), Pam’s former love interest and Kaling have shot one episode each for the upcoming season

– The Jim and Pam drama continues!

– Dwight’s still crazy

– Carell has still not committed to making an appearance on this season but the cast, crew, and fans have their arms wide open for him. No pressure.

– The new season premieres Thursday, Sept. 20!
