Unbreakable Kimmy Schmitt star Tituss Burgess has partnered with Virgin Airlines for the first-ever “Pride Flight.” The one-off Trans-Atlantic flight will depart from London and land in New York City for the 2019 World Pride.
Virgin Airlines has set the flight up as the ultimate pre-party for the event. The flight will come with a new kind of in-seat entertainment including performances by drag queens, speed-dating, a Judy Garland sing-along, and even a DJ. The in-flight entertainment will all be hosted by Burgess. The flight will also be piloted and staffed by all-LGBTQ employees.
Burgess is a natural choice to host the flight. Burgess became famous for playing larger than life gay characters in comedies like Unbreakable Kimmy Schmitt and 30 Rock. He is also a Broadway veteran who appeared in musicals like Jersey Boys, The Little Mermaid, and the 2009 revival of Guys and Dolls. The comedic actor has also performed with Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and performed at the New York vigil for the victims of the Pulse Massacure in 2016 outside the Stonewall Inn.
2019’s World Pride will fall on the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, which is commonly seen as the first major demonstration for LGBTQ rights. This will be New York City’s first World Pride, previous host cities have included Rome, London, and Toronto. The internationally organized event seeks to celebrate queer communities around the world even in countries where homosexuality is illegal. Virgin Airlines has been a long time sponsor of Pride celebrations and will be allocating a portion of the ticket sales from the flight to be used to fund pride events in the UK. There will also be raffles and other fundraising activities onboard the flight.
The flight will be aboard the VS 69 and will be departing from Heathrow Airport. Seats in the economy started at £380 (~$502), but have now skyrocketed to over £700 (~$925).
