Todd Barry, Lizz Winstead, Nick DiPaolo, more to honor George Carlin with live show

On Wednesday, July 17, comedian Kevin Bartini and Gotham Comedy Club will present, Reverence for the Irreverent: A Tribute to George Carlin. Back in October, a group of dedicated George Carlin fans exited a community board meeting victorious when they voted in favor of renaming a block of Manhattan’s W. 121st Street after the late Mark Twain Award winner. The movement met resistance from conservative leaders in the community, namely Father Rafferty of the Corpus Christi School, a school that Carlin attended as a boy. The motion awaits final approval this Fall, when its presented to the City Council in an omnibus bill of street renamings. “Basically, so long as a different district community board didn’t approve a street named after Bin Laden, we should be good,” says Bartini, the man behind the movement to honor one of the most beloved comics of all-time.

The fight for George Carlin Way has not been cheap, so Chris Mazzilli, owner of Gotham, has offered the venue for an evening as Carlin’s Crusaders present an all-star line-up of comedians wishing to celebrate a man who paved the way for modern stand-up. As stated on Gotham Comedy Club’s website, “Funds collected will help pay outstanding debts to web designers, graphic artists, publicists, media consultants, and other people who have helped the George Carlin fans create a professional campaign to honor him.”

Bartini will perform, as well as the following comedians:

Nick DiPaolo (HBO, Showtime)
Eddie Brill (Letterman, Comedy Central Presents)
Rory Albanese (Executive Producer of The Daily Show)
Todd Barry (Comedy Central)
Lizz Winstead (Co-creator of The Daily Show)

And special surprise guests will be there as well. I swore an oath not to reveal names (an oath where you place your hand on the Bible and then recite the Seven Words You Can’t Say On Television), but I can assure you that the planned celebrity drop-ins are of ‘living legend’ status.

“Although we haven’t won just yet, we wanted to take a moment to pay tribute to such a legendary performer,” said Bartini, who is the warm-up comic at The Daily Show. “I figured that a show dedicated to one of the greatest of all time should feature only the best of the best. It’s really incredible all of the monster names that have offered their services. It’s going to be great!”
