Tracy Morgan ‘more responsive’ after accident, Walmart trucker hadn’t slept for 24 hours

Tracy MorganNearly two days after he was critically injured in a six-car accident on the New Jersey Turnpike, Tracy Morgan is still in intensive care but is “more responsive,” according to Morgan’s rep Lewis Kay, who says Morgan is dealing with a broken femur, several broken ribs and a broken nose. The 45-year-old comedian is expected to remain hospitalized for weeks. “We’re tremendously overwhelmed and appreciative of the outpouring of love and support from his fans,” Kay said.

Morgan’s longtime friend and writer, comedian James McNair – aka Jimmy Mack – died in the crash. He was 62. Comedian Ardie Fuqua, 43 and Morgan’s assistant Jeff Millea, 36 are also in critical condition at Robert Wood Johnson hospital in New Brunswick, NJ. Comedian Harris Stanton, who suffered a broken wrist, was treated and released.

Yesterday, police confirmed that it was Walmart truck driver Kevin Roper, 35, who was behind the wheel of the 18-wheeler that slammed into Morgan’s limo bus, causing the multi-vehicle accident. No one in the other vehicles was injured. Roper was scheduled to appear in Middlesex County Superior Court today but it was postponed until Wednesday. However, a criminal complaint was released. The complaint, in part, claims Roper hadn’t slept “for a period in excess of 24 hours” when the crash occurred. Roper was charged with death by auto and four counts of assault by auto. The Georgia-based truck driver posted $50,000 bail on Saturday night, the same day the accident occurred.

The driver of the limo bus Tyrone Gale, who was treated and released, took to Facebook to express his grief. “I can only say feeling helpless on the highway was very hard to take,” he wrote. “There was nothing I could do but scream at times. I am truly sad for the loss of James McNair.”

Although drugs and alcohol have been so far ruled out as playing a part in the accident, an investigation is ongoing. Morgan was returning from a show at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino early Saturday morning when the accident occurred.
