• Twitter suspends Laughspin writer’s Bill Nye parody account, 200,000 followers sad

It doesn’t happen often, but every once in a while Twitter will decide to suspend a hilarious parody account, because it violates their policy that states no user is permitted to imitate another person. And this week, it happened to one of our own, Laughspin scribe and comedian Lucas Gardner.

The nearly 200,000 tweeters following @Bill_Nye_tho, which imagined the famous mechanical engineer as a sort-of stoner who, unlike the real 56-year-old Bill Nye – aka The Science Guy – is up on all the latest social media-speak, had the day-brightening feed taken away from them.

Gardner has no intentions of bringing it back, even if Twitter changes its mind. “I was disappointed they decided to suspend the account,” he tells Laughspin. “They’re very strict about parody pages. I said in the bio ‘I’m not the real Bill Nye,’ but I guess you have to explicitly use the word ‘parody.’ Lesson learned.”

“I didn’t really tell anyone I ran it until it got suspended and other people starting making fake Bill Nye pages and saying they were me,” he adds. “My account is fully retired now. It had a good run. A lot of people are tweeting me to tell me how much they liked it. Also, just as many people are telling me how weird it is to find out @Bill_Nye_tho isn’t black. Some people are literally angry about that!”

And although the Buffalo-based 22-year-old aspiring stand-up and comedy writer doesn’t plan on launching a new parody account, you might like to know he’s got another feed that actually predates @Bill_Nye_tho. “I write it from the perspective of a 15 year-old from Ecuador who only tweets about Dragonball Z,” Gardner says about @love_that_Goku. “After I outed myself as @Bill_Nye_tho I revealed that I run that account too, which may have been a mistake because people really wanted to believe it was a real person. I probably shouldn’t have dropped the illusion. Hopefully people enjoy it anyway.”

We’ll keep an eye on it, Lucas! Also, Laughspinners—you should keep an eye on @Lucas_Gardner, which is also very entertaining.
