• United States, Iran nuclear weapons negotiations need diplomacy. Satirical video with ‘NO-gotiator’ makes case for peaceful resolution.

satirical videoAs negotiations between Iran and six world powers — the United States, France, China, Russia, Germany and Britain — over the middle eastern country’s nuclear weapons program are set to conclude July 20, a satirical campaign in order to increase our understanding of the situation and to promote the concept of diplomacy over military force in reaching a final agreement has been released. Anchored by a faux informercial starring comedian Ben Rameaka as the “NO-gotiator” who’s selling his book Getting to No, the campaign also includes an official site for the fake book.

At the heart of the negotiations is the aforementioned nations’ concern that Iran is too-quickly amassing materials in order to build massive nuclear weapons, which will be used to attack its enemies. In order to slow down production, the U.S. has imposed sanctions on Iran, which, according to some, is crippling the country’s economy. Iran contends they’re much further away from creating nuclear weapons than the Unites States believes– and that once finished with production, their goal is not to wage war on opposing countries. In fact Iran’s foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif just wrote an OP-ED for the Washington Post claiming he once proposed a peaceful solution to his country’s production of nuclear weapons. At the time, Zarif writes, George W. Bush’s administration denied diplomacy and instead ordered Iran to stop producing uranium altogether. As a result, Iran’s nuclear activities actually expanded.

And this is exactly the type of thing those who agree with the underlying message of the video are hoping to avoid in the United States’ current negotiations with Iran. And they’re using some stellar satire to make their point. In the video below, you’ll find the NO-gotiator whipping up his prospective book-buying audience into a frenzy, repeatedly telling them that compromise is absurd. He also interviews a young girl and an old woman who have used his techniques to great success. A senior staffer in the state department (Jeff Kreisler) however, doesn’t fare as well with the NO-gotiator or his fans. Check out the full video below.
