• Watch Jon Stewart’s Daily Show retirement announcement (Video)

Shocking news broke yesterday that Jon Stewart announced he will step down from his award-winning Comedy Central series The Daily Show with Jon Stewart later this year. Stewart told his live studio audience last night during the taping, vaguely explaining that The Daily Show and its fans don’t deserve “an even slightly restless host.” Word quickly spread on the Internet and the reports were soon followed by an official statement by Comedy Central.

The beloved late night political satirist did not share any concrete reasons for his departure. “I don’t have any specific plans [but] I got a lot of things in my head,” he told viewers on Tuesday night’s episode. Speculation is already running amok, with absurd and not-even-a-long-shot names like Amy Poehler being thrown around. While the #JonStewartReplacements circus does its thing, watch Jon Stewart’s sincere, heartfelt announcement during last night’s Moment of Zen.
