Watch the trailer for Kevin Avery’s ‘Thugs, The Musical’ with David Alan Grier, Margaret Cho

With compelling musical numbers like “Who’s That Keepin’ It Real,” “Drive-By” and “Oh No She Di-in’t,” how is it you’ve likely never heard of the smash hit stage show Thugs, The Musical? Well, for one. I lied. It’s not a smash hit. And, secondly, it’s not a real show. But what’s very real is the faux documentary by the same name, created and written by comedian Kevin Avery. It premieres on Thursday at the Los Angeles Comedy Shorts film festival.

Here’s the deal: a black actor in Hollywood named Michael Gardner (Avery) cannot book any jobs. Directors and producers claim he’s simply not “black” enough to play what we’ve all come to know as the handful of stereotypical roles for African American men. The other constant working against him: His lack of talent. Gardner’s solution is to write, direct and star in his own theater production, which will prove to all the naysayers that he can so act black! Or, so he thinks.

You should check out the just-released official trailer below to get a better idea of what I’m talking about. And, yes, you’ll see some familiar faces: that’s Margaret Cho, David Alan Grier, comedian Baron Vaughn and more!

Thugs will also be screened on May 2 at the New York No Limits film series and May 15-19 at the Tupelo Film Festival in Mississippi. And keep an eye on for more screenings and Kevin’s stand-up dates!
