• What do you think of Jim Carrey’s comments about violence in Kick-Ass 2? (Poll)

Jim Carrey expressed his concern about the amount of violence in his next movie, Kick-Ass 2, a comedic superhero sequel that hits theaters Aug. 16. Distancing himself from the film, yesterday he tweeted, “I did Kickass a month b4 Sandy Hook and now in all good conscience I cannot support that level of violence,” adding, “My apologies to others involve[d] with the film. I am not ashamed of it but recent events have caused a change in my heart.” That’s Carrey, pictured above, in the movie as Colonel Stars and Stripes.

This isn’t the first time that Carrey has taken a stand against gun violence. Back in May, he appeared as Charlton Heston, the former president of the National Rifle Association, in a Funny or Die video sketch. In the video he becomes the singer in a band called Lonesome Earl and the Clutterbusters, in which he expresses his frustration over the lack of stricter gun laws. “I find the gun problem frustrating and ‘Cold Dead Hand’ is my fun little way of expressing that frustration,” Carrey said about the music video.

Mark Millar, the creator of the comic book series in which Kick-Ass is based upon, responded to Carrey, “I’m baffled by this sudden announcement as nothing seen in this picture wasn’t in the screenplay eighteen months ago … Kick-Ass avoids the usual bloodless body-count of most big summer pictures and focuses instead of the CONSEQUENCES of violence, whether it’s the ramifications for friends and family or, as we saw in the first movie, Kick-Ass spending six months in a hospital after his first street altercation.”

It’ll be interesting to see if Carrey has anything else to say in the time leading up to the August premiere, or if he’ll assist in promoting the movie or not.
