• Whoopi Goldberg documentary about Moms Mabley headed to HBO

Whoopi Goldberg’s documentary honoring the iconic comedienne Moms Mabley will make its television debut on HBO in November. The project made an impressive showing in April at the Tribeca Film Festival. Goldberg had funded the project using the popular crowd-funding website, Kickstarter.com.

Moms Mabley was a successful black comedienne back in the 30s and 40s performing on the vaudevillian chitlin’ circuit. She continued performing into the 1970s and appeared on mainstream shows such as The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, The Ed Sullivan Show, and The Bill Cosby Show. A phenomenal woman and someone who helped paved the way for black and female entertainers, Mabley has inspired countless comediennes.

The HBO documentary, Whoopi Goldberg Presents Moms Mabley, will feature never-before-seen photographs, archival footage of her stand-up and television appearances, and interviews with modern day comedy icons. Eddie Murphy, Joan Rivers, Sidney Poitier, and Bill Cosby are only some of the people who appear in the film. Exploring the subjects of racism, sexism, and ageism, this project will introduce an entirely new audience to such a groundbreaking hilarious woman.

Whoopi Goldberg Presents Moms Mabley premieres on HBO on Monday, November 18 at 9 pm EST.
