A man named Scott may have just attempted the worst half-court shot of all time. With $1 million on the line at the ACC Tournament semifinals, the fan barely got the basketball past the free throw line. And now his hilarious fail is going viral.
The worst half-court shot ever took place at Friday night’s Duke/Notre Dame contest in Greensboro, N.C. During halftime of the game, Scott was brought out to attempt a half-court shot for $1 million. But his throw was not even close. And now he must suffer the embarrassment of viewers around the world playing the Vine of his failure on a loop.
Even though Scott had arguably the worst half-court shot of all time, he still did have a chance to win smaller prizes. But a Reddit user who was at the game revealed that Scott missed a $1500 free throw and a $500 layup, as well.
It has also been reported that the man who attempted the worst half-court shot of all time is a Navy veteran. Discovery Channel star Richard Ray Rawlings, a spokesperson for Havoline, the contest sponsor, said as much on Twitter.
@Browns_Fan32 no one can hate on that! At least he was out there. He’s retired navy. Dude’s a bad ass.

“Scott didn’t make the half-court million dollar shot, but he’s still a badass in my book!” Rawlings wrote after the worst half-court shot of all time. “Thanks for giving him the opportunity, Havoline. #gasmonkey#gasmonkeygarage #richardrawlings #havoline#hotshotcontest #theacc.”
In fact, it has since emerged that Scott is just years removed from a bout with Catastrophic Antiphospholipid Syndrome, a rare and life-threatening disease that eventually required a kidney transplant. He still takes 39 pills a day and has to receive infusions of an experimental drug every other week. So we probably shouldn’t be too hard on him for his missed half-court shot.
“The halfcourt shot wasn’t pretty, and then I got a free throw and that didn’t get to the basket. And then, I couldn’t believe I blew the layup,” Scott told Sporting News.“The Lord has blessed me probably as much or more than a lot of people. I feel that every day. God has been a power in my life, and he keeps giving me miracles every day.”
